Tips for Seniors - How to Stay Healthy in Winter

It’s important that seniors know how to stay healthy in winter and the colder season. Wintertime is notorious for being filled with colds and the flu. Getting sick is even harder on senior citizens because as you get older, you have a harder time fighting off illness and disease.

Common colds for the elderly can also often turn into something worse because it’s so hard to recover. Plus seniors are more prone to getting severe cases of hypothermia and frostbite. That’s why when winter hits, it’s important to know how to help your loved one stay happy and healthy.

There are many side effects that come along with winter including sickness, depression, and lack of motivation. In this blog, we will discuss the best way to help your loved one beat the winter blues and avoid getting sick.

How to Stay Healthy in Winter

Stay Active

It’s important for your loved one to continue living an active and healthy lifestyle, even when the colder season hits. That’s why seniors should find an indoor workout center or classes to attend. They can even go on walks around their living community if that’s easiest. Exercise will help boost their mood and keep their body in check so they can increase blood flow and avoid joint pain or other issues.

Keep Warm

Studies show that 50 percent of hypothermia and frostbite related deaths occur in people ages 65 and up. Layering up is the best way to keep warm and avoid illness, hypothermia, and frostbite. Make sure your elder has blankets, slippers, and plenty of socks for when they’re inside. Then if they decide to head out into the cold, be sure they wear a warm hat, scarf, gloves, and a winter jacket.

Get Some Sun & Vitamin D

Winter is known for being filled with cloudy days, which can cause people to feel a little gloomy. This is also known as Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). The best way to avoid getting down in the dumps is by taking Vitamin D or purchasing a “happy lamp,” which emits UV rays. The lamp even provides a boost of Vitamin D, which helps boost the user's mood.

Eat Right

A healthy diet will ensure a healthier immune system. Seniors should plan on eating plenty of healthy superfoods to help their health. These foods consists of citrus fruits, bell peppers, broccoli, garlic, ginger, spinach, yogurt, almonds, turmeric, green tea, papaya, kiwi, poultry, sunflower seeds, and shellfish - just to name a few. By boosting their immune system, they will be able to prevent sickness or better fight of a cold if they do catch something.

Avoid Germs

A clean environment is the best way to avoid getting sick. Because people are prone to getting sick in the winter, hand washing and hand sanitizer is a necessity. To ensure your family member avoids germs, remind them to always wash their hands before meals and once they return home. It’s also important to keep the living area clean to ensure germs don’t spread or roost in the space.
